CHAPTER SIX



Uche looked up as Chuck entered in his office looking the devil may care in his designers jeans and T-shirts, his long hair tied at the back. Diamond dotted earrings on both ears. Uche got to his feet to give his long childhood friend a hug.
“How was your flight?”
“Uneventful”
“So how are you and Nma but mostly how is my godson?”
“You are lucky you came back because your godson has been asking me every other minute if you are back and coming and Nma would have killed you if you had disappointed him yet again”
“I promised him and I keep my promise”
“And congratulation again on the hat trick that won you the trophy”
Chuck laughed “You know I am glad because recently I have been thinking of retiring”
Uche looked up sharply “You are still in superb form”
“Yea right”
“Are you alright, you are not sick or something?”
“Of course not, just thinking that’s all, you know I’d like to pay some attention to my business”
“Your fans will miss you not to talk of the girls”
Chuck laughed “I have not decided yet”
“Have you seen Stanley?”
“One thought Ijeoma and I found myself turning the stirring”
“I don’t want the two of you going for each other’s throat tonight”
“Doesn’t it bother you that the girl is just milking him dry, she doesn’t love him, she only cares for the diamonds, holidays abroad, credit cards?”
“It does but Stanley doesn’t see it that way and till he does, I am not going to chase my friend away because of a worthless girl”
“Someone ought to make him see”
“He is a big boy, some mistakes are better experienced, just like some lessons, besides he is rich enough to afford her, he was just named the second richest man in Africa”
Chuck shook his head “I give up, I am not worried about his bank account, I am worried about his heart”
Uche laughed “Why not worry more about yours; I hear you came back alone?”
Chuck sat back and relaxed, giving his friend a dismissal smile
“What can I say?’
“Don’t tell me she is history?”
“Well it didn’t work out”
“Who are you bringing to the party then?”
“No one for now, but you know me, I had a surprise this morning and I am considering someone”
“Star?”
“No, I can’t date her tried as much as I could maybe because she used to sleep with you”
“We never slept together Chuck and she is a good person”
“Unfortunately she is not the surprise I had this morning” Chuck smiled “Jeez nothing to do for fun around here”
“That’s because some people actually work you know
Chuck chuckles
“So who is this surprise?”
“Can you imagine me and Helen?”
“Nma’s Helen?”
Chuck nods
“No! No! No! Not Helen, you can’t!”
Chuck frowned “If you were not happily married I would have started suspecting you”
“Chuck I know you and the rate you go through women, she is not in your league”
“Like you were not worse than me before you found an angel and had the good sense to marry her”
“Helen is a keeper, you only go after her if you are ready to commit, and she is not the holiday kind of a girl”
“She is a big girl and who knows maybe she is what I need to make a commitment”
Chuck got up
“I thought you came to supervise how your money is growing?”
“Yep but I have changed my mind. How do you guys manage it, sitting at a place for hours?”
He winked and left.
Uche watched him leave… then he remembered Chuck and Helen, he was suddenly wishing that Helen would be what his friend needed to make a commitment.

Helen knew it was time to go if she wanted to make it to the party but some how she couldn’t find the strength to get up from her sitting position. She was dreading the party and at the same time looking forward to it. It wasn’t just the party she was dreading, it was Chuck, it was hard to believe that she was looking forward to seeing him and at the same time dreading it. She didn’t have the foggiest idea of what to say to him or how to act when she would see him again. She wondered if he was thinking about that kiss the same way she has been thinking about it. She could still feel herself being crushed to the wall and being kissed senseless, her body on fire wanting more. She couldn’t believe she wanted more of those hot kisses but somehow she knew she might not be getting them again ever. She wasn’t just his type; guys like Chucks don’t fall for a nobody like her. She was just Nma’s staff and nothing more, she sighed. She wished, what did she wish? She asked herself, that things were different? No she cautioned herself. Things are the way they are for a reason; she lost her memories for a reason. She came to work for Nma for a reason. If only she could find out what these reasons were maybe she would believe a little that someone like Chuck might actually fall in love with her. That he would spend the whole day thinking about their kiss and devise ways to kiss her again. She sighed again but it all seemed like pipe dreams to her. It’s nothing but a dream that would never come true. She was Helen, a fictitious name she picked up. Even if Chuck was to love her, she could never love him back unless her memories came back. After all she could be somebody’s wife or mother or fiancée for all she knew.
A cough sounded from the door and she looked up sharply and found Nma by the door.
“Are you alright” Nma asked concerned, she had been watching Helen for a time and saw series of bitter emotion pass through her face and she wondered again, how little she knew about Helen.
“I am fine thank you” Helen answered trying to smile “is it time already”
Nma nodded “I thought you would like a ride to Eden or is prince charming picking you up?”
“Prince charming?”
Nma laughed “I told you your time would come and I will tease you as mercilessly as you teased me”
“You are mistaken, he is not my prince charming, I just met him”
“Just, who was it flirting with him during our last show?”
Helen laughed “Okay you win but he is not my prince charming and he is not picking me up, so thanks for the ride”
“You are welcome”
Helen stood up and followed Nma out, dreading every step she took.

Helen looked out of the window of Nma’s metallic black Mercedes G-wagon. She watched the scenery but not seeing it. She had never dreaded going to Nma’s house before but today was different. She was afraid of everything that could go wrong, she was afraid of making a fool of herself over Chuck. She wanted this party over and done with so she could go back to figuring out who she was. She had let it slide for too long. Before she had been afraid of what she would find, too afraid of the man in the mask and later too afraid of telling Nma because she had left it for too long. But she was no longer afraid. She was going to do a lot research, she would visit specialists. No matter what it took, she would find out who she was. Then she sighed, she also had to figure out a way to tell Nma. She heaved another smile.
‘If I didn’t know any better, I would think that you don’t want to come to my house’ Nma said staring at her briefly before turning to road
‘Of course I wouldn’t miss Shawn’s party for the world’
‘Glad to hear it but something is bothering you Helen’
‘Really I am fine Nma, I think I have been over doing it, trying to impress you, Amber and your mother in law is not an easy undertaking’
Nma smiled ‘Whenever you are ready to talk about it, I am here’
‘I am sorry’ Helen said lamely
Of course Nma would see through her lies. She wanted to tell her badly but the time was not right. She would tell her when… you had better make it soon before she finds out by herself her mind whispered. Knowing Nma she could just figure it out just like that. Helen stifled another sigh. She would tell Nma but not a visit to a doctor, taking the first step of finding out who she was, then she would have enough to tell her.
Helen turned to Nma and smiled hesitantly ‘it is not like I don’t want to tell you but I need to figure it out a little bit in my mind first’
Nma squeezed her hands and nodded as she drew to a stop in front of the castle that was Eden.

Coming out of the car, Helen could hear a pair tiny feet running towards them and shouting ‘Mama! Mama!’ the tiny feet ran into his mother’s already spread hands. Nma gave her son a hug and kissed him all over.
‘Where is Grandma?
‘Hello Love’ Helen said
‘ta hinhin’ the boy exclaimed and jumped down his mother’s body and into Helen’s hands
