EVERY WAKING MOMENT

AMBER ROMANCE

EVERY WAKING MOMENT

CHAPTER TEN

Helen sat on one of the magnificent garden benches and watched Junior and Skye, Tessy’s daughter play with the beautiful flowers that the garden was so proud of. It was a breathtaking place and she smiled fondly at the children’s antics. Then she heaved a sigh because as magnificent as the garden was her mind was too muddled up to enjoy or appreciate its beauty. Her thoughts were darkened by her predicament. What was she going to do about Chuck, about Dave and most importantly about her memory? She picked up her phone and opened the browser to Google. There must be someone, somewhere she could go to get professional help, because if she didn’t solve this problem. She would stay confused for the rest of her life or till she remembered. She will not ever get the chance to be with Chuck.
Then she laughed ironically startling the children. They looked at her oddly
‘Sorry darling, aunty was just musing’ they went back to their play.
Helen sighed, when it came to Chuck she was the most confused. Sometimes it seemed as if there was a force greater than anything earthly calling a tune for them to dance and dance, they were. It seemed almost incredible that they ended up together last night. What was the odd that among all the people gathered, they had to fall in love with the same room spend the night together. There was more to what tune fate seemed to be calling that meets the eye and she felt that only by dancing together would they find the perfect rhythm created for just the two of them. Maybe she shouldn’t throw away this chance. Now that he seemed into her maybe she should stop fighting it. Who knew where it would lead if they started dating. To marriage perhaps she laughed then stopped. Who said it couldn’t lead to marriage. She might just be the one he would give his heart to. After all he would fall in love and get married one day, why not with her. Because you have amnesia that you have hidden from the people who love you and if you do this, he would find out and they will all feel betrayed by you, her mind whispered
Helen heaved another sigh. There was only one solution to it, to be happy, to have the chance of a life time with the only man she could ever love.  it was very vital that she regained her memory. And she must do this in a way that no one especially Nma would feel betrayed by her silence on the matter.
‘That bad huh’
Helen started out of her thoughts looked up and saw Ij standing over her
‘Excuse me’
‘I have been watching you daydream’ she smiled ‘and no doubt about Chuck. Girlfriend you got it bad for him’
‘This is not a discussion I am willing to have with you’
‘Listen, he is hot, sexy and wealthy, I don’t you blame I would have snagged him before now if I could’
‘I thought you already have a hot, sexy and wealthy man’
‘Don’t unsheathe those claws yet. Yes I do but what warm blooded girl wouldn’t daydream about Chuck’ she laughed
Helen had nothing to say so she kept quiet, silently agreeing with her
‘You and I should be the closest in this bunch’
‘How so?’ Helen asked. The last thing she wanted was a friend like Ij. A conscienceless being who was greedily taking from a man who cares for her without a thought or two about his feelings
‘We are the least popular and the most hated of the group’ Ij replied
‘Speak for yourself’
‘They hate me because they can’t imagine how a Miss Nobody like me could snatch the second richest man in Africa right from under their noses’
‘Hate is a strong word. I think they are weary of you and they think you don’t love him enough and you certainly act like you are there for all you could get’
‘Yes I demand the glitters, the designers, vacations and five star treatment everywhere I go but do you think I don’t offer anything in return’
Helen looked at her a bit confused
‘You are right, I’d expect love, loyalty and trust if I were him’ Helen mused
‘Wake up darling! It is hypocritical of the lot of them to judge me for getting paid by him. I offer him my body to do as he likes, I clean up after him, I cook for him, play his hostess, do all the wifely duties without the benefit of marriage and they think I should do it for free so that when he goes on to marry a debutante like Rose would want for him I would be left stranded and back to square one? I don’t kid myself. I take what I am offered and give what I am asked. What is relationship if not give and take?’
‘When you put it like that, it makes a little sense. But there is much more to a man and a woman being together than material things and sex. You make it sound like high class prostitution. You sell yourself short thinking that he will never have more use for you than a bedmate and a housekeeper’
‘It’s called reality Helen so if I were you, I would take whatever Chuck offers and invest in myself.’
‘So if you meet a man who is ready to offer more than what Stanley is offering in material things, would leave him?’
Ij laughed
‘Let’s just say that man is married to Nma but there are lots of eye candies around for the fun of it’ Ij got up I would leave you to your daydream but it is better to live in reality so open your eyes babe’
Helen heaved a sigh of relief and watched her go, more confused than ever. She should hate the girl like the rest but somehow she could understand where she was coming from. Somehow she could relate and she wondered how that was even possible that she could relate with a high class prostitute. Maybe it stemmed from the fact that she was not the one to judge after all here she was hiding from them a secret that could destroy their trust for her. How could she judge Ij when she did not know if her past was darker than Ij’s weird present?
Suddenly she heard some voices arguing, she watched to see if the children were alright and went to investigate.
Chuck was standing with Ij and she was talking in her usual seductive way of half laugh
‘One day darling you would take what I freely offer, come to think of it, how long can you resist all these?’ she struck a seductive pose
Helen gasped as the realization of what Ij’s superfluous visit was dawned on her. She also wanted Chuck and came to find out what was up with them. Did she not realize that Stanley and Chuck are like brothers?

Helen stopped to listen when she heard Chuck speaking
‘I just have this to say, stay away from Helen and be very careful there is only so much of your disgusting persistence that I can take’
Chuck moved on and began walking to her and Helen quickly ran to sit on the bench, no one the wiser of what she had seen and heard. Then a strange kind of respect began to grow in her heart for Chuck. He wasn’t the heartless womanizer he has been termed by the world. A heartless womanizer would take what Ij offered regardless of friendship and certainly not caring whom they hurt. Her admiration and respect for him grew in that instant so much that she genuinely smiled when he came into her view.
‘Wow! That smile’ he said and came to sit beside her
‘Did you get child minding duty too’ Helen asked
‘No I wanted to see you’
‘What for?’
‘I believe I didn’t handle this morning well. I came to apologize’
Helen was momentarily struck dumb. Was this not the same man they said couldn’t care less about how he treated women and certainly not about how often he broke their hearts.
‘I am surprised’ was all Helen could say
Chuck grinned at her and her heart missed several bits. He was so handsome and she almost forgot that he said he came to apologize but had not yet apologized.
‘Well get on with it’
‘With what’ he asked tucking a stray hair from her face ‘Get on with kissing you because that is absolutely what I feel like doing right this minute’
She slapped his hands away ‘Get on with your apology’
He laughed ‘so that I came to apologize is not enough’
She nods ‘something tells me I am about to witness a rare occurrence I have the inclination to record it for history sake’
He laughed and then kissed her. He was fast, she didn’t see that coming, one minute he was talking, he next, he was claiming her lips in soul searing kiss. And she couldn’t help but melt against him. He was everything she wanted in a man and more. She wished that she could just remember her past this instant and become free to give him her all. She could tell that Chuck would demand nothing but all from a woman he cared about. And she was sure he cared about her or he wouldn’t come to apologize. An apology he has not rendered yet. Helen this is not an apology. He knows of your weakness for him and is only exploring, her mind intensely reminded her.
‘If we don’t stop now…’ Chuck groaned
‘Your style of apology beat all’
He laughed
‘Before I do I want you to know that I am not apologizing that we shared a bed or kissed. Holding you throughout the night was beautiful’
Helen stared dumbfounded but her mind racing. What did he mean by that? Was this a confession of love or did he care about her and how she made him feel? Certainly she was not the only woman he had shared a bed with and theirs was innocent. What should she make out of what he said to her? She had to force herself to focus on what he was saying.
‘But... I am sorry for what I said afterwards, I let my temper get the better of me. It has been a long time I lost my temper over a woman.’
Helen heaved a sigh ‘okay I too said things I am not proud of. I guess I was running scared and confused finding you beside me and not knowing what went on while I was asleep. And then I was really ashamed not of being with you but of myself that we were found like that, as if we were…
‘stop there before I lose my top over again’ he smiled ‘I get you but if we had done more than sleep together I promise you, you  wouldn’t have slept through it’ he told her
She looked down suddenly shy and suddenly so in love with him.
‘Something about you… I can’t put my finger on it but I determined to find out what Helen’
She could only stare at him, falling in love with him was stupid and the intensity of her feeling was scary especially knowing he was not offering more than a holiday affair. How would she survive if he left after his holiday and after wards pictures of him and beauty queens from around the globe start appearing on the magazines and blogs? She needed a leverage no she needed to be saved from herself.
‘I do not deny I am attracted to you in a way I have not been attracted to any woman before and I know you do too. Tell me does Dave’s kiss make you feel the way mine makes you feel’
‘It doesn’t matter’ Helen said floundering, trying to organize her thoughts ‘I am with him and I can’t leave him for a holiday affair or isn’t that what you are offering?’
‘I have not offered anything yet Helen’ he was suddenly angry that she could resist him that she could put Dave before him. He knew he was being conceited but he didn’t care.
‘Then what is this conversation all about Chuck?’ Helen was tired; she just wanted to be far away from him and from all the confusion crowding her mind.
‘Have dinner with me and maybe we will figure it out’
‘I don’t think that is a good idea, me and you in a dim lighted room doing nothing but staring at each other, the restaurant might throw us out for indecent behavior instead.’
She smiled and he laughed, Helen realized that this was the first time she was hearing him laugh for the pure fun of it. He had laughed with sarcasm or mockery but not like this and  she loved the husky sound of it.
‘Don’t get confused about what I said; we might fight like crazy like we often do’
‘ … or we might kiss like crazy and if I am lucky you would wear low cut dress so when I can’t take the depth of your eyes anymore I would have something else to look at’ he smiled and she smiled back at him. No wonder women flocked around him, it wasn’t just for the money or good looks but he has a way with words and a woman cannot help but drown in it.
‘You are beautiful’ he said to her
Helen was startled, she knew she wasn’t ugly but she also knew she was not beautiful
‘Now you are lying’
‘If Dave doesn’t think you are beautiful then he is a fool’
‘I have never seen myself as beautiful’
Suddenly he jerked her towards him and kissed her hungry and fast, ‘your naivety is quite alluring you have a beauty that grows on a man when he is not looking. You have grown on me Helen’
She smiled ‘we should be heading back’ they stared at each other chest heaving and lost, slowly he drew her to him, this time around, the kiss was soft and sweet and he made her feel as beautiful as he saw her. Helen could then believe that she was beautiful because this magnificent man found her so. She drew closer to him and gave her all in the kiss. ‘I love this man’ she whispered to herself. So she was going to do all in her power to make sure she remembered her past, because he was all that mattered to her and she couldn’t live without this… without his sarcasm, his kiss, his laugh, his touch, his words, his quick temper.
Suddenly her phone rang and they reluctantly let go of each other. Helen answered the phone
She turned to him ‘Time to go’ he helped to her feet and called to the children. Shawn rushed to him while Skye shyly walked over to Helen; together they left the garden hand in hand with the children. And he thought he wanted this, a wife and children. Then stopped himself. That thought he couldn’t deal with. He didn’t know if he was fit to be a father, thanks to his mom.

AMBER ROMANCE

EVERY WAKING MOMENT (SECOND IN THE BILLIONAIRE BAD BOYS SERIES)

CHAPTER NINE

Helen woke up feeling very warm and well rested. The day was just breaking, the light blue dawn was pouring in from the slight opening of the window drapes. She stretched languorously and yawned. She felt light and glorious; she had never had this kind of restful sleep in a while. She smiled and thought of all that happened last night and her smile broadened. There was definitely some kind of feeling between her and Chuck no matter how hard he tried to deny it. And it was her desire to make sure the feeling grew. Then she sighed as she remembered that she was not free to return his feeling. No she said to herself, she wasn’t going to think of that today. She tried to turn as if by doing that, she could turn away the ugly thoughts threatening to engulf her, only for her to meet a hard wall obstructing her movement. Becoming alarmed, she gently touched the wall and found it soft like human flesh only hard and muscular.
Helen sat up and rubbed her eyes, her heart skidding and her mind reeling she peeked and saw some shadowy figure of a man lying next to her. She had gone to bed alone or had she? She did also go to the right room or didn’t she? With mounting dread, she gently turned to take a clearer look at the man sleeping on the bed with her.
‘Quite moving about for goodness sake a rough voice said in British ascent.
Helen eyes widened in an indefinable shock
‘Chuck! What are you…’ she sat up and at the same time, he sat up rubbing his eyes. First he assaulted her senses with the Heavenly view of his naked chest and she stared shamelessly and couldn’t look away. Had she slept beside this beauty all night and didn’t know it? She wanted to kick herself for missing this fantastic opportunity, for not even waking for once to… to. Helen stopped, trying to rein in her thoughts.  Then he looked her and she was lost, she  lost her ire at that moment when his eyes like the sea early in the morning poured all over her, she knew there was no power stronger than the hold he had on her.
‘What is the meaning of this, how did you get in here?’ he asked looking around confused and breaking into her thoughts
‘Oh no that is not going work, it is definitely not going to work, are you crazy stalking me to this extent?” she asked trying to recover her balance
‘I am still trying to wrap my head around this one, this is my room’ he looked around the room ‘I am not mistaken, this is definitely my room’
‘How is this your room, I got here before you and this is the room I usually pick when I have an occasion to spend the night here’
He relaxed back on the bed and laughed
‘I am really glad that you find sneaking into my room funny’ she tried sarcasm since nothing else seemed to be working
‘I am surprised you are complaining, I have been told I make a heaven on earth bed partner’
Helen wanted to hit him but she didn’t want to dignify his action by getting violent, instead she sat up. Too late she was just in her bikini briefs and didn’t even know it until he mentioned it. But she was past caring besides this was more than she wore to the beach.
‘I am going to tell Nma this… I am going to make them aware that they have a pervert as a friend’
He laughed again. ‘If I wanted a female company for the night, I wouldn’t have chosen you for the world.’ He winked and tried to get up
Helen stared at him trying to understand why his confession hurt her so much. ‘Yet here you are... in my bed’ she smiled sweetly at him
‘I chose this room before this house was built, I made changes in the blue print when I saw it. I bought all these furniture in this room. I don’t see how you think can get away with lying about how you got in here but I am beginning to think I am the one being stalked’ he answered wondering why he didn’t notice that he wasn’t alone. He didn’t even want to understand why he felt so peaceful and energized; he hadn’t felt this way in a long while. What was it about her? He thought as his confusion and dread rose.
‘Even if I am obsessed with you which I am not, I wouldn’t choose this way to make it known to you’
What was happening, she was losing the control of the conversation, when did the table turn when did she become the stalker, what was happening?
‘Did you really come for your purse yesterday; was that another excuse to get into my bed?”
‘How dare you think…?’
‘…because no one in this house will give you the use of this room especially when I am in town and visiting at the same time’
Helen became speechless and could only stare as the meaning of what he was saying dawned on him. Nma had never questioned her choosing to stay in this room of all other rooms the castle could boast of. If Uche knew she stayed in this room, he never gave any indication. Was he right, was this an honest mistake? If it were, would he believe her?
He sat up and faced her ‘What kind of a woman are you, how come you are very desperate to cheat on your boyfriend… you think I would offer you more, pay higher for your services…’
She slapped him for an answer and afterwards stared at the red angry marks of her finger with shock and unbelief as he slightly touched his cheek. Suddenly she became afraid, very afraid of his reaction and made a quick move to run from the violence she could see clearly erupting from him but he was quicker and caught her by the waist
‘If you ever try something like that again I promise I would hit back’
Helen knew the terror engulfing her was of something far more dangerous from her foggy past than from any threat Chuck could utter or pose at that moment and she couldn’t help drowning in it
‘I am sorry please don’t hit me’
Shocked Chuck stared at her, of course he would never hit her but she was behaving like he was a monster about to devour her, she was shaking and her mouth was quivering. Not knowing what to do, he hugged her to offer the little comfort he could and reassure her that he would never hit a woman least ways her but when he gathered her in his arm. He found out why he slept like a baby last night. Their bodies were meant for each other and he kissed her forehead,
‘I don’t know why I feel this volcanic hunger for you all of a sudden, it scares me but I would never hurt you, never physically…’ he swooped and began to kiss her.
As he kissed her, Helen could feel herself rising from the dark abyss she found herself in. and she circled her hands around his neck. He was the light and she couldn’t help reaching out for it.
Suddenly the door opened Stanley, and Uche burst into the room.
‘Hey buddy, how about some beach football’
The two of them stopped at the same time noticing Chuck and Helen who had just heard voices. Helen sprang away from him guiltily but Chuck was slower in letting her go
‘Be with you in a moment’ he said lazily and watched the two leave.
Helen wanted die of the shame that engulfed her.
‘Oh my goodness!’ Helen exclaimed in shock
‘Helen…’
‘Stay away from me’ she said to him. She got up from the bed and began to look around for her clothes
‘I get this is an innocent mistake, both of us ending up in the same bedroom and not knowing it till now’ she stopped to look at him ‘but what happened, what they just saw, wasn’t innocent’
‘No it was not but it is none of their business
‘Those are people whose respect I have earned but no thanks to you all that is in the gutter’
He smiled and got up from the bed and stood before her
‘So kissing me is equivalent to losing respect…’
‘Look... I have to leave; I will come for my stuffs later’
‘Helen you lost respect when you entertained the thoughts of cheating on Dave with me… if you are looking for who to blame, look into the mirror.’
Helen stared at him. They stared at each other. At the moment she hated him more than any human in the whole world. She wanted to hurt him but there was nothing she could say or do at that moment that would satisfy the rage inside her.
As she stood in her bikini briefs and him in his boxers staring at each other, chest heaving trying to control their respective temper and fight the urge to dive at each other and satisfy the other hunger that had been gnawing at them since they woke up together, the door opened the second time. This time around so engulfed were they in each other that they didn’t care who came in until they heard a gasp.
‘Unbelievable’ Star said
‘Sorry Helen, thought you were alone’ Nma said and slowly closed the door.
Helen refused to think about what her friends would think and drew her chiffon gown over her head and left.

Chuck sat back feeling like he had been dragged butt naked across the desert and back. He heaved a sigh and slowly pulled on his jeans and T shirts.

Helen got to the kitchen door; where most of the women were and stood back watching them. She could clearly see the tension what they witnessed was causing. She heaved a sigh, she had to face it, face them. Like Chuck said it was really no one’s business who she decided to sleep with. Chuck was a grown man and so was she. Nma she knew would not out rightly condemn her but she knew she needed to explain to her. She didn’t owe Star any particular explanation.

‘Isn’t that the latest slut in town’ Star said coming to stop in front of Helen
‘Star come on!’ Eva said then she turned to Helen and smiled ‘Good morning’
Best to get it out of the way Helen thought.
‘I am sorry about what you had to see… it was not my intention for you to…’
‘…to catch you with him, okay fine but tell us what was your intention?’ Star rudely interrupted
Helen turned to her ‘Actually I owe you no explanation Star, don’t think I care about what you think…’
‘I guess not so you are telling us only Dave deserves your explanation oops! Forgot all about him didn’t you?
‘Stop it Star, please… it is really none of our business what two consenting adults choose to do’
‘Really’ Star turned to Amber ‘Everyone present here knows what is between I and Chuck’
‘With the exception of me’ IJ said ‘Are you guys dating?”
‘Shut up!’ Star commanded Ij.
‘Whatever it is existed only in your mind, Chuck doesn’t waste time when he wants a woman, as we can obviously see’
Helen sensing trouble quickly thought of way to avert it
‘Nothing happened between us’ she interjected
They all turned to look at her
Eva laughed ‘Okay, you spent the night with the number one bachelor in the country, the sexiest man alive in the world and nothing happened’
‘It was an honest mistake. I didn’t know the room I picked was his, so I went to bed early and he came in sometime in the night and we both didn’t realize we had company till we woke up this morning’
‘Seriously you expect us to believe that story’ Star asked angrily
‘I don’t expect anything from you Star. This explanation is for my friends. I couldn’t care less what you think’
‘It’s my fault, I am sorry Helen…’ Nma who had been silently watching said. ‘I have been meaning to tell you about that room, actually... I am sorry’
‘Okay hmm! Strange that you took to that room the same way he did... do I sense a connection there’
‘Not if it means the rage I feel now for the pig headed man’
They laugh…
Helen heaved a sigh of relief.
‘What can I do help Nma’
‘Could you mind the children, take them to the garden and out of our way’
‘Done… where are they?”
‘Their rooms for now’ Nma smiled and Helen left.
‘She is lying’ Star said
Nma turned to her eyes blazing ‘I do not appreciate you coming into my home and insulting my friend. I don’t appreciate the condescending way you speak to her…’
Star opens her mouth to say something but Nma waves her off.
‘Helen may not be in your league but she is a sweet girl. If she says they didn’t do anything, I believe her and if that does not satisfy you then go to Chuck and find out and while you are at it ask him to define what is it that is between the two of you because I sense you are confused and uncertain’
‘Okay… lets tiptoe out of that territory and go back to preparing for my sweet nephew birthday party’ Eva said pleadingly.
Nma reluctantly turned away from Star and went to the fridge and threw it open, trying to calm herself.

Meanwhile Chuck now dressed jogged down to the beach, where his friends were just standing around instead of playing ball like they said. Chuck knew they were not just waiting for him, he also felt that they were not going to slap each other’s back and joke about what they saw with mild curiosity. He doesn’t understand it but Helen seemed to be important to his friends.
‘Hey, why are you standing around like a club already beaten’ he tried to joke
‘Helen, really, of all the women…’ Stanley started
‘I am sorry I thought your girl friend is supposed to be IJ did I mix things up’
‘Both of you stop it’ Uche said
‘Of course you didn’t mix things up but Helen is not your kind’
‘Fantastic, I have a kind now pray tell what is it?’
‘She is not the one night stand kind of a girl Chuck… what is with you?’
‘I am sorry you didn’t hear her kicking and screaming when I dragged her into my lair last night. I think you should pay better attention Mr. Knight in shining amour or maybe you should forget about other women and pay more attention to the one you call yours’
‘Chuck!’ Uche warned but it was too late Stanley was already reacting
‘What do you mean by that?’
‘just reminding you how not long ago you told me to mind my business and that the only woman I need to worry about is the one I am sleeping with, back at you bro’ he picked the ball and left
‘If you hurt her I will come for you’
Chuck turned eye blazing ‘funny how I said the same exact word to your girlfriend few days back’
There is silence everywhere.
‘Do something’ Eva’s husband pleaded with Uche
‘The only way to end this, is with a few blows and I don’t feel getting like punched at today, it’s my son’s birthday’
‘They will come to blows’
‘Yep, and it will calm them down and my father is looking forward to it. He has not grounded anyone in a while’ Uche laughed and they both saw where Uche’s father was rubbing his hands together in anticipation and they began to laugh but turned to Chuck and Stanley
‘I don’t want to believe it of you but if you go after IJ…’
‘Not even if she is water and I am in a desert dying of thirst but like I tried to tell you, I am not the one you should be worried about’
‘How dare you?’ Stanley took a swing at Chuck and his blow connected with his jaw. Chuck caught his next punch and swung but Uche caught his fist.
‘Enough!’ they all stop at Uche’s father’s booming voice
‘I came here to play football and hang out with the guys, but all I have done so far is listen to gossip and then this?’
‘I am sorry sir’ Chuck apologized with shoulders stooped
‘You two girls go over there and sit for a while I play ball with the men… will deal with you after that’
Uche laughed but one look from his father had him shutting up, he picked the ball and followed his father but not before grinning at Chuck and Stanley.

AMBER ROMANCE

EVERY WAKING MOMENT

CHAPTER EIGHT

Helen walked slowly to the beach; already she could hear the gleeful laughter of people already enjoying themselves. It sharply contrasted the feeling of disappointment and pain in her heart. She stopped as she came in view of the beach, maybe it was all for the best. Chuck was a distraction she couldn’t afford at this point in her life. There were important things she needed to do before she could settle down to the barest form of relationship. She needed to remember who she was. She needed to know if she was free to love another man. So if somehow she had lost Chuck, maybe it was for the best, she thought

She watched as Dave spotted her and she managed a smile and began walking towards him. Chuck was a first class womanizer, she might have held his fantasy briefly, but who could tell how long she would have held it before he got bored and looked for someone else. So this would be a good thing in a long run. With Dave she could have harmless fun, she would be in control but Chuck was a different story. She didn’t need the kind of feeling he aroused in her. She didn’t need that kind emotional upheaval.
‘Come let’s find a space, everyone is having fun’ she allowed Dave to draw into the mood. She smiled at him
‘I would love somewhere a little far from everyone’ she told him with a smile.
‘Why, we will miss all the fun’ Dave said
‘Maybe but we will have a measure of privacy to talk. You know we need to’ she hoped she looked convincing enough. She hoped that he couldn’t see that as what it was a ruse to hide from Chuck.
‘You have a point, okay’
They got to a place which didn’t put them so far from the party but it was a place where they necessary wouldn’t have to be a part of the whole fun if they chose. She could see the disappointment on Dave’s face when she picked the place but she was beyond caring. From now on she only cared about one thing, figuring out who she was. And that meant she put herself preservation first.
‘Will this place do?” she asked just to be polite
‘We will manage’ he replied and spread the mat Nma had given her.
‘I will get us something to drink’ Dave said and left
She smiled and looked around. Uche and Stanley were arguing over the grill. Paul, Nma’s father in law and Charles were setting up a kind of fire. Chuck she saw was helping them while chatting up Star who seemed to hanging to his every word.
Well that didn’t take long, she thought. Now she was convinced that whatever feeling he had for her was more imagined than real. Maybe he thought if he made her believe they had a chance at something different she would fall into his bed begging. Well wasn’t she the lucky one to see right through him. He was welcomed to Star. Star had always had eyes for him, always talking and joking about what and how she was going to seduce him or get him to the altar. She didn’t know how much of her chatter were serious but they were a perfect match for each other. Star wouldn’t feel he was too good for her. She had got her own charm, exceptional beauty and charisma to compete with his every day.
She heaved a sigh and looked around for Dave when she didn’t see him; she stood up, deciding to take a walk. Walking down the beach would do her some good, it would help clear her mind of all that is Chuck and probably put her in the party mood.

Chuck watched her leave the safe distance she must have chosen to get away from him. He chuckled and bent down to hand Charles another wood for the bon fire they were building.  If he was honest with himself he would admit that recently he had been longing for something similar to what Uche and Nma had, something strong and steady. He thought he found it with Kim and tried more than he had ever done to make it work but when he realized he was forcing on himself something he was not feeling anymore, he broke it off. He was sad that it didn’t work out and had somehow blamed himself. He was damaged, thanks to his mother. Only a few people knew just how damaged he was. That was why it was difficult for him to trust any woman.
But what he felt for Helen in just a short period was new and gave him hope that there might actually be someone out there who could make him believe in love but it took only the same short period of time for her to prove him wrong and to confirm to him that he was right all women were the same. With the exception of Rose and Nma but finding women like them was like searching for needle in hay sac.
‘Hey handsome’ Eva said
Chuck smiled as heavily pregnant Eva waddled to his side
‘Whoever she is must be real important’
‘Who, she, and what are you talking about’
‘I have been watching you for a while now, if I didn’t know better I would say you have it hot for Helen. You were staring at her so intensely’ Eva laughed
Chuck was startled. He had to do better; he had to be more careful before people started reading too much into nothing.
‘Pleased to know that you know better’
‘So who is she?”
‘Not she, just figuring some things out’ he said ‘So is it triplets or what? Whoever thought you have this kind of fat in you’
‘Once you find the right woman and it would be my turn to tease’ she walked over and kissed Charles
‘I don’t know what I am doing here, everywhere I turn, someone is kissing someone, here hand this over to him’ he handed the last wood to Charles and made his escape. He needed a drink anyway.
Chuck got his drink and began walking, he needed a little air, and the spontaneous laughter that occasionally rang out was getting to him and worsening his mood. The last thing he wanted was to spoil Nma’s party with his ever increasing black mood.

Helen decided to head back, it was a good walk, what one needed to shake of a bad mood was a sound and sight of rolling ocean being peeped at by the moon, the heavy wind that threatened to uproot the coconut trees and the star light winking mischievously. Helen smiled, here was paradise but it belonged to Nma. She wanted her own brand of paradise.
‘I see you are enjoying this party as much as I am doing’
Helen stopped at the voice as excitement began to seep into her body but she couldn’t find the source of the voice at first. Then she heard the slight thud of feet as someone jumped down from one of the boulder. She saw her dream come true emerged from the darkness and sauntered towards her
‘I just needed to see this beauty first’
He shrugged
‘What’s your excuse?’ she asked
‘I have a lot on my mind’
‘Good luck figuring them out’ she walked past him but he caught her hands
‘Have you told him yet?’
‘…told who what?”
‘Your boyfriend, have you told him you cheated’
‘What happened can hardly be called cheating; a few kisses don’t qualify as cheating’
‘you are right we had a few kisses but in our mind and hearts it was more, we wanted more and if I had not stopped it could have been more and that by my definition  is cheating’
‘As far as I am concerned nothing happened, whatever kisses we had I have forgotten. I call that momentary madness and not cheating’ she told him firmly
‘Let go of me’ she demanded
‘I find it odd that you would forget so soon, I was there remember’
‘I know it might sound impossible to Mr. sexiest man alive but there are actually some women around who don’t think you walk on water’
‘Would you care to test that theory?’
‘Let go of me Chuck, I need to get back to my boyfriend’
‘Of course but when you do ask him this question’
‘What question? She asked
And he kissed her, she should protest, she should push him off, he was holding her but lightly, she could push him away if she so wished but she didn’t. Instead she drew him nearer. How could she not when she felt like she was drunk and swaying. How could she when she felt like one with the strong wind, like she could push all obstacles aside, like the moon, she could ignite and light up whatever darkness that threatened, when she felt like the billions of stars, like a happiness from a distant echo. She moved closer to him and in that moment she could believe that loving this man was not wrong and was the only right thing in the world to do.

This was magic, thought Chuck, as frightened as he was by the overflow of feeling he was experiencing, he knew without a doubt that he wasn’t letting go, he was going to find out what it was about Helen that set his blood boiling, what made kissing her different, what made him loose control when she was near, why this sudden volcanic feeling, why didn’t he notice her before? Why now that he had couldn’t he get enough of her? He had his answer, he thought. Maybe all he needed was to sleep with her to his heart satisfaction, get her out of his blood. After all it was obvious from the way they started that this was nothing more than lust.
Feeling relieved and seeming in control once more, he ended the kiss
‘Ask him why you feel like the moon and stars are within your reach by another man’s kisses
With that he walked away.
No, this shouldn’t happen again, kissing her; turning her body upside-down then walking away and making it look like she was the evil one. She didn’t asked to be kissed by him, she only responded because she couldn’t help it
‘Stop!’ she said before she could stop herself.
‘There were two of us just now, I didn’t tell you how it felt kissing you, and so you must be talking about your own feeling. So I suggest you ask you super model girlfriend the same question but if you ask me I would say it is nothing but lust and unfortunately I have never been the one to give in mere animal satisfaction of the body’
She walked past him ‘It has to mean more for me’ she added to herself silently as she walked with her head held high. It was high time some woman put him in his place. It was time he found out the kind of girl she was, that she was not a cheat or a foolish brainless girl, who thought the moon and stars depended on him for their shine.

Helen got back and found Dave back and looking around for her. He smiled when he saw her and she smiled back.
‘For a moment there I thought you have been kidnapped.
“And who could carry out such fit in this place’ she laughed
‘I don’t know maybe some deity’ he handed a drink
‘Are you superstitious?’ Helen asked jovially as she sat down.
‘When you have the great fortune of being with a very beautiful woman in a magical place fit only for goddesses, you have to know that some god somewhere is definitely your competitor’
Helen stared at him amazed ‘wow that is definitely a great angle for nollywood’
‘I am doing my film next quarter and it is an epic’
‘Really, great, I am already your number one fan’
‘So where did you go?”
Helen slowly lowered the bottle and stared at him. Did he know? Did he suspect?
‘Oh sorry, I am not supposed to ask?”
Helen laughed ‘this place is magical, I just took walk and explored’
‘I am guessing you don’t want to do that again, I thought I could lure to a very far place and search for fairies and neck’
Helen remembering what happened when she took a walk smiled at the memories.
‘Would you settle to slow dancing to that Celin Dion song instead’ she asked
‘Would you mind me showing you off, that we dance where others would envy me?’
She nodded and offered him her hands.

Chuck sat with Star who was trying to chat him up and failing. He couldn’t stop starring at her. The smile that never left her face as she talked with him. The easy way they touched it each other. It nearly killed him when her voice rang out in shocking laughter.
‘Uche tells me you are single again’ he heard Star say
He turned to her and smiled
‘Not exactly’
‘You are getting back together?’ Star asked smiling
Chuck knew she wanted to know and he wished he could give her a straight answer but he wasn’t talking about Kim when he said not exactly. He was referring to this silly feeling he was developing for a girl he didn’t care about until a few hours ago.
‘You know how things go Star, you can never tell what the heart would want’ he smiled at her.
From the corner of his eyes he saw Helen and her boyfriend stopping at the middle of the dance area and started dancing to a really slow song. The pain he felt was real, it felt like someone just pierced his heart with sword. He stopped himself before he could rub his heart.
‘You feel like dancing?’ he turned to Star and she smiled her consent.

Nma walked up to Tessy who was standing still and watching or observing like Tessy would put it. Nma thought
‘What’s so interesting? Nma asked stopping at Tessy’s side.
‘shhhh!’ Tessy replied
Nma silently looked around for something of interest but only Helen dancing with Dave which was amazing because they make a very cute couple and maybe Chuck and Star who were coming to dance floor.
Tessy turned to her and laughed happily ‘Amazing’
‘Amazing, what’s amazing?’ Nma asked
‘Chuck and Helen are on their way to falling love with each other’
Nma turned back to the dance floor and saw nothing to that effect. ‘Are you sure because they are not even dancing with each other’
‘Amazing isn’t it? How we yearn and pray for love, only to fight it when it comes because you are afraid of falling, not knowing if he will catch you. It happened to me and to you and I believe that is the phase those two are in now’ she laughed and hugged Nma.
‘Maybe they need a little nudge into the right direction’
‘How can you tell, Star... Dave…’
‘Pay a little attention honey’ Tessy told her, leaving

Helen missed a step just as Star and Chuck joined them on the dance floor. She found herself gripping Dave tighter.
She dared a look at Chuck and their eyes met and held. Suddenly she was not dancing with Dave anymore, she was dancing with Chuck he drew her closer. And whispered to her ‘I wish we could stay here forever, just the two of us, the rolling ocean, the weaving coconut trees, the winking stars and smiling moon and this serene white sand and no one else. Helen was lost and kissed him… on the shoulders. If Dave was surprised he didn’t show it, only hugged her tightly.
‘Switch partners?’ she heard Chuck say and Helen was startled out of her day dream and she looked up at Dave but he was smiling easily as he took Star’s hands and delivered her up to the one man who could destroy her and her world as she had come to know it.

‘What are you playing at?’ Helen hissed at him. Somehow she knew he had one up his sleeve and she was not going to like it
‘Nothing’ he whispered in his husky voice and she found herself falling
‘Like I would be foolish enough to believe that’
‘You are right, there are a lot of scenario playing in mind but there is not a thing I could do about it with all these people milling about’ he whispered
‘It doesn’t matter, whatever you have in mind would take two to accomplish I have sworn that nothing like what happened before would ever happen again’
He laughed softly ‘Be careful of what you wish for darling I might decide to help your vow along’
‘And I would be the happiest woman on earth’
‘No honey, you would end up the bitterest woman on earth from having to wonder for the rest of life what it could have been like’
Feeling frustrated, she stepped on his toe and he jumped she smiled ‘be careful of what you are playing at, you really need those toes to be sexy’
‘You….’
She stepped out of his hands and turned to Star ‘I would have him back now’ still smiling. She took just one step back and saw him starring at her and smiling like the devil himself. That startled her because that wasn’t what she expected.
‘I would be leaving soon’
She turned to Dave ‘why, the party is getting started’
‘I don’t want to be getting back late my friend’s house, he is married’
‘Okay…, I think I should go to bed too, we would have an early start tomorrow’
‘Why you just started enjoying yourself’
Helen laughed ‘It wouldn’t be the same without you’
‘Now I feel guilty for leaving’
She smiled and touched his brows ‘don’t, I really am feeling very sleepy’
‘You are exceptional’ he smiled and they stopped dancing ‘No matter what happened from here you will have a part of me’
‘That’s the sweetest thing I have ever heard’
He held her by the hand and they left.
Chuck watched them leave and felt murderous. He couldn’t help the image of the two of them together. It was obvious from the way they couldn’t stop touching each other what they were going to do.
Slowly he smiled at Star and kissed her, anything, just about anything to stop him from following and ending up a murderer.
He broke off the kiss when he realized he could actually hurt Star. He shouldn’t take advantage of her. When did he become so insensitive that he would use a friend so callously because he couldn’t decipher what was wrong with him? Feeling like a monster he let go of her and led her out of the dance floor. He was going to fight this feeling, it was not right that a woman should have this strong hold on him and he was going to win no matter what.

AMBER ROMANCE NOVEL (EVERY WAKING MOMENT

AMBER ROMANCE

EVERY WAKING MOMENT

CHAPTER SEVEN

Helen entered the guest suite she always used whenever she had to spend the night at Eden castle.  She dropped her overnight bag on the bed and sat down and heaved a sigh. So here she was finally about to meet Chuck again in a few hours. Her mind went back to that kiss. She shouldn’t be relieving it but she couldn’t help herself. She shouldn’t be looking forward to it again but that was all she could do to keep from running mad. To distract herself, she got up and began to put away her toiletries. She hung the attire for tomorrow and laid out the red bikini and lemon chiffon short gown she was wearing over it. She wondered.
She should go out and meet others, she was sure the living room will be filling up by now yet she could not put one foot in front of the other. The truth was whether she wanted it or not, she was going to see Chuck again. That wasn’t her reluctance, her fear she realized was of her. She knew somehow that resisting Chuck if he thought to finish what they started was zero to none. Not that she wanted to resist the man if he was really interested in her, no she wouldn’t because she had stopped lying to herself long ago that he was the love of her life. The only reason she was going to try hard at resisting him was because of her amnesia. Before she entered a relationship, she needed to find who she was, a married woman, a fiancĂ©e, a mother? These things she needed to know, she didn’t want a case where she would be very serious with a man and wake up morning only to find she was a loving wife to another man. Relationship, what relationship, the only thing closest to a relationship that Chuck Obi would be wanting from her would be a weekend fling, beginning tonight and ending tomorrow night,  if he was stayed long enough, she thought sadly.
You are not going to solve the whole problem right now Helen, she told herself. The best she could do was to wear her bikini and gown and go down to meet the others.  She was a grown woman and one that can handle herself in any given situation. She was a big girl and shouldn’t let the thought of a man who didn’t know she existed till this morning scare her off friends, stop her from giving Nma her full support this weekend or turn her off having fun and enjoying herself this weekend. Even the way she was hiding up here was silly and pathetic. She was going to enjoy herself whether Chuck wanted it or not. With that conviction she got into her bikini and gown and marched to the mirror resolutely and refreshed her makeup.
With determined footsteps she left the room and closed the door behind.

Helen found people gathered around the kitchen table. Snacking while others were raiding the fridge but there was no sign of Chuck for that she was grateful. Seeing him here would have shaken her equilibrium no matter the pep talk she had given herself. Amber was the first to see her.
‘Hello darling’ Amber cooed and dragged her into the circle. Soon Helen was mingling and laughing and having fun. She tried not to spare a thought to Chuck. He could go to blazes for all she cared. She was glad she was dressed for the occasion; it would have been difficult to compete with Amber in white bikini and sarong. How possible was it that any could compete with the kind of figure Amber in her fifties could boast of except maybe Nma when she got to that age.
‘So Helen how are the designs coming up?’ Rose Nma’s mother in law asked.
Helen opened her mouth to answer but Chuck entered at that very moment and she forgot what she was going to say. She just stared at him like foolish teenager. Helen ate him up with her eyes, if anyone noticed how hungrily she looked at him, she didn’t care because she couldn’t help herself, all she could do was stare and admire how handsome he looked in a jeans and white black T shirts, which did nothing to hide his bulging and rippling muscles. She swallowed hard and tried without success to rein in her thoughts to no avail. She wanted this man with every fiber of her being. She wanted nothing more than to belong to him, and for him to belong to her. She watch with growing dread and excitement as he made his way round the table greeting family and friends he hadn’t seen in a while. She watched him swing Shawn up and around. Though Shawn hadn’t seen him but Chuck was undeniably his favorite uncle. Helen wondered what he would do when he reached her side of the table. She feared somehow that he would ignore her or greet her dismissively like he had always done. That was before she sneaked into his bedroom and jumped him. It would be nothing short of what she deserved if he decided he didn’t want anything to with her again, she thought sadly
An excited laughter cut into her thoughts and got her looking up. Chuck was swinging Nma around, Helen couldn’t help the momentarily envy that engulfed her. She wanted that same treatment she realized, she wanted to be held in his arms, she wanted... this is not helping Helen said to herself. So with a sinking heart she watched as Uche came to his wife rescue neatly taking her from Chuck hands
‘Go find your own wife’ Uche said
 . Nma laughed gleefully.
‘You think that is going to earn you my forgiveness?’
‘I am so sorry Portable; I couldn’t come home for the dedication?’ Chuck apologized with a wink
Helen watching felt something tug at the roots of her hearts, if only… stop it! She cautioned herself. This would never be, even if Chuck remotely returned her feeling somehow,  it would still not matter unless her memories returned.
‘Portable?’ Amber wondered aloud.
Yes potable, Helen thought. it had just occurred to her that Chuck called Nma portable and she wondered what it meant and why she had never heard the nick name before now.
‘Chuck thinks with her height and her curves she is pocket size and had taken up calling her portable’
Amber laughed
Helen felt her heart sink lower; she had always suspected that there was a part of Chuck that was in love with Nma. Competing with Nma was a lost cause because Nma was all that she wasn’t. She knew how much he emphasized on Nma’s killer’s shape, beauty and charisma. Stop it! She screamed at herself silently. The right thing to do she told herself would be to leave the table so she could get a hold of erratic thoughts before she behaved or said something she would forever regret.
‘hmm! What a nick name’ amber reflected
Helen turned to her and managed a smile. She had to join the discussion to  stop eating him up with her eyes before anyone noticed
‘It fits’ Helen said but it came out in mere whisper if anybody heard they gave no indication. Uche decided at that very moment that his wife needed kissing.
‘Show off’ Chuck laughed and turned to Amber
‘Amber make me the happiest man on earth and marry me, we could compete with those two, give them a run for their love’
‘I am a grandmother and too old for you’
‘You don’t look a day beyond thirty’
Amber laughed ‘Now that’s a comforting thought’
Helen tried to stay current with the conversation but it seemed impossible because she couldn’t help being disappointed that he once more acted like he didn’t know her.
He had said hi, kissed, and hugged everyone but her. Even the hated IJ got a reluctant hi from him. She hadn’t gotten not even a hug she thought miserably. She knew that he didn’t know she existed or cared but after what nearly happened this morning she expected at least the slightest acknowledgement from him. Who was she kidding, the man might have forgotten what happened this morning. Maybe he had chunked it down to another morning in Chuck Obi’s fabulous life. She was sure that having a girl fall out of nowhere into his bed was normal for him, Helen fumed inside wishing she was anywhere but sitting down stiffly and feeling invisible. Why she thought she wanted this man, she couldn’t tell, he was arrogant, prideful and insensitive. Yes she knew she wasn’t up to his class of girls but ignoring her in the midst of everyone was painful and thoughtless of him and she wanted nothing more than to leave the room but she couldn’t do that without drawing undue attention to herself. Or worst giving the arrogant pig the impression that she was running away or that his deliberate insult got to her.
Suddenly she felt a hand touch and squeeze her shoulder. Chuck, her heart leaped in joy.
‘Saving the best for last’ he bent down and whispered into her ears. Helen couldn’t help the shudder that ran through her body as his breath kissed her skin.
‘I believe we have unfinished business; She should say something, anything to dissuade him or to get people from wondering what he was saying to her but her mind was clear of all thought and she was incapable of the barest of thoughts.
‘I have been looking forward to seeing you  and have been afraid that you would decide not to show up’ he dropped a kiss and left her alone to make sense of what he said.
Helen looked up at the others afraid that they somehow heard or saw but everyone was engrossed in what they were doing and she breathed a sigh of relief. Then she sneaked a look at him and he caught her eyes and held it. Helen couldn’t look away. He was truly the definition of a Greek god, no man had the right to be this handsome. No man should be allowed to have this kind of powerful hold on a woman, the way he had on her. Helen felt her mouth water then go dry, she had wet her lips. Misunderstanding the act, he winked and toasted her with the bottle of water he had taken from the fridge.
She needed rescuing, Helen thought. Chuck thought that the weekend was the perfect venue to finish what happened this morning and she was very afraid because she didn’t know if she could resist him if he made a move on her. One thing was clear she didn’t have control of her senses or body when he was around. So she needed something or someone to save her from what would turn out to be the biggest mistake of her life. She didn’t want to be his lover, that is a lie, her mind whispered. Okay yes she wanted to be his lover but she didn’t want to be his weekend lover, an itch that had to be scratched and soon forgotten. Besides even if he offered her the world which to her meant marriage to him, she would still turn him down because of her lost memories. Marriage? Helen that is the definition of pipe day dream, all Chuck wanted was to satisfy his curiosity and nothing more. She needed to do something to save herself from the shame that might come later on if she couldn’t resist him. Maybe she should leave, leave now and save herself. If she did that, Nma would be hurt and confused, that she wouldn’t ever do that to Nma.
The house keeper ushering someone in got her looking up and then she smiled. Somehow she could believe there was someone up there who was watching and listening.
‘Dave’ Helen said and got up to give him a hug and kiss. If Dave was surprised at her enthusiastic greeting, he didn’t show it. He held on to her and kissed her more and longer than she intended.
Chuck watched the scene with a feeling he couldn’t begin to understand. A feeling he didn’t care to put into words. He only came to the bitter conclusion that no woman was different. They were all the same ready to drop their pants at the sight of a bigger fish no matter how deep their commitment to someone else was. He felt eyes on him and caught Uche watching him; he smiled at him, and rolled his shoulder dismissively. Then he noticed Star, ever since he came in, he only had eyes for Helen and no one else. Had he not tried to stop himself from rushing to her by making sure he greeted her last?  And all the while he didn’t know that the little tramp had a boyfriend. He dismissed his confused feeling from his mind and turned to Star, if there was a woman who had been consistent in what she felt for him, it was Star,
‘Who’s your friend?’ Someone asked
She turned to the group and introduced Dave to all.
‘I know you’ Uche said
‘Your family own the biggest chain of malls around here’
‘Guilty as charged’ Dave smiled
Rich as well as handsome, Chuck thought but caught himself in time. What business of his was it if the boy was rich or not. From the time he laid his lips on her, he had decided that he was welcome to her. He didn’t want a woman who could profess to love someone and then kiss another without a thought. He heaved a sigh and wondered why he was so angry at the moment. Refusing to believe what his mind was telling, he began distracting himself by talking to Star
‘So you are the black sheep that refused to join the family business’ Stanley said
‘Yes that would be me’ Dave answered and sat down on Helen’s seat,
‘I will get you another seat Miss’ the house keeper said
‘Please don’t trouble yourself’ Dave said and drew Helen down to sit on him.
Helen sat down not knowing what to do, had she bitten out more than she could chew. Had she over done it in her bid to tell Chuck that she was not one of those silly girls that fell over themselves to sleep with him? Would she now have to fight Dave off? It would serve her right. This was the typical example of falling from frying pan to fire, she said to herself and looked at Chuck and their eyes met but gone was the cockiness, the longing and desire she had seen in his eyes before for her. All she could see was resentment and cool dismissal. That startled her and she began to wish that she didn’t over do it with Dave. Somehow with her foolishness she had brought back the Chuck she used to know. The Chuck who didn’t care to know she existed.
‘Okay everyone, I guess we are all here, let’s proceed to the beach’ Nma said jovially
People began to get up
Helen felt she should make amends, she felt that Chuck needed some kind of explanation. She wasn’t thinking right, she was aware of that but somehow she didn’t want this Chuck that didn’t care if she existed. She wanted back the Chuck that wanted her.
‘Go ahead Dave, I have a little thing to take care of’ she smiled at him
‘If you say so honey’ he replied and dropped a kiss on lips before she could turn away.
Perfect, she said to herself. How do you do it Helen, you should be given award for always finding the worst situation to dump yourself. As soon as Dave cleared the door, she turned and saw that the kitchen was empty except for Chuck who was getting another bottle of water from the fridge.
‘You want some water?’ he said turning to her
‘No I… I wanted to explain about Dave’
He smiled and patted her shoulder ‘I don’t care’
Let it go Helen, don’t embarrass yourself more than this, but at that point having him understand seemed more important, having him look at her with passion again was worth the embarrassment, she thought.
‘I am you must be wondering who he is after what happened this…’
‘Yes you right I did but that was before I figured it all out’ he stopped on his way out of the door.
‘For a moment there I thought you were actually different’
He winked at her and left.
Helen watched him leave, trying with success to stifle a sob. She found the nearest seat, gasping for breath as pain, anguish and shame shot through her. She had him and didn’t even know it. For a fleeting moment she had her heart desire and didn’t even know it, till she lost it. No, she said, if that was true, if he felt anything more than the usual, it was not possible even for him to just shut out.
With that she stood up to join the party, determined to find out what his true feelings for her were.
